This syllabus has been produced in order to bring about change

This syllabus has been produced in order to bring about change, and in particular change of teaching methodology. In order to implement change successfully is essential to understand that English is not like most of the other subjects specified on the curriculum. For unlike them English is not a content-based subject, but a skill-based subject. English is not about any particular topic but rather, it is about any practising something-listening, speaking, reading and writing. Of course, when people listen, speak read or write, they-don’t carry out these activities in a vacunm. They listen to, or speak read or write about something. Topics, therefore, are included in the communicative language curriculum but they are not important in themselves. Neither are they included for their own sake. Rather they are there as necessary vehiteles for the practice of the four language skills.
